iDoll

We know a lot about the Catacombs, but we know even less about what we don’t know. We are certainly familiar with the historical facts and the amusing anecdotes, not to mention the endless stories of "epic" underground parties that - honestly - sound miserable (seriously, stop trying to sell your mud-soaked after-parties as the pinnacle of nightlife).

Today, a different kind of subterranean experience is possible with iDoll, an installation by Filipe Vilas-Boas. Hosted by Flaq Paris Gallery - a hybrid curiosity cabinet, experimental space, and café - iDoll features a projection onto a Virgin Mary of the "infinitely large." Thousands of stars appear as symbols challenging the concept of the sacred. The visitor is an active participant, as their own face is recognized by an algorithm and then mapped onto the piece. This is not the first time Vilas-Boas has presented such a project; with Shooting Thoughts, he previously transformed a cathedral into the Milky Way.
